London surpassed itself with Christmas lights in 2015 but now they are down it does seem a bit gloomy - so here's the perfect antidote - Luminere London starts tonight.
Streets and buildings across the city will be lit up for first Lumiere London Festival which runs for four winter evenings from today, January 14 to 17.
More than 20 international artists, including UK artist Julian Opie and US artist Janet Echelman, have been commissioned to feature light installations in Leicester Square, Piccadilly, St James’s, Carnaby Street and Oxford Circus in London’s West End, to the German Gymnasium and Granary Square at King’s Cross.
Look out for Benedetto Bufalino's defunct red phone box in Mayfair which will become a living aquarium filled with goldfish and Garden of Light, by TILT, (pictured above) which will turn Leicester Square into a tropical summer garden during this cold weekend.
At King's Cross, admire the Circus of Light by Ocubu, a magical animation across the breadth of the wonderful Granary Building.
Lumiere London will be the first major light festival in the city and is set to rival international festivals such as Vivid Sydney, Berlin’s Festival of Lights and Fête de Lumières in Lyon.
Creative company Artichoke is producing the show which follows the biennial Lumiere festival which has been lighting up Durham since 2009.
The event, from 6.30pm-10.30pm each night, is being supported by the Mayor of London and VisitLondon.com plus Bloomberg Philanthropies, Heart of London Business Alliance and King’s Cross.
